Financial Sector Advisory Council (FSAC)

The Financial Sector Advisory Council (FSAC) is a non-statutory body established in March 1998 as a result of the Financial System Inquiry (Wallis reforms). It brings together a range of financial market participants to provide advice to the Government on policies to facilitate the growth of a strong and competitive financial sector. The Council helps to ensure that we maintain an efficient and dynamic financial system.

Members of FSAC are appointed in their personal capacity for two years, subject to continued involvement in the relevant area of the financial sector. FSAC currently meets around six times each year.

FSAC is supported by a secretariat provided by Treasury.

FSAC can be contacted by writing to the following address:

Government's Response to the Financial System Inquiry

The Government's response to the Financial System Inquiry came in two stages.

Stage I introduced a comprehensive package of regulatory reforms for the financial sector which included the introduction of new legislation.

Stage II's main objective was to facilitate the transfer of State- and Territory-regulated financial institutions (such as building societies, credit unions and friendly societies) to the Commonwealth regulatory regime. This change was to encourage competition between the non-bank deposit taking institutions and the banks.
