Australia and Japan schedule talks to revise Income Tax Treaty

Abstract:

Further to the Treasurer’s announcement on 17 November 2006, officials from the Australian Treasury and Japanese Ministry of Finance have agreed to commence formal talks to revise the current tax treaty between the two countries.

The negotiations are scheduled to begin in Tokyo on 22 January 2007.

The negotiations will seek to modify the existing tax treaty, which has been in force since 1970. 

The Treasurer has previously called for public submissions.

The Treasurer announced that Australia and Japan had reached an agreement in principle on a new income tax treaty to replace the existing Agreement. After the governments of the two countries have completed the necessary procedures, the proposed new treaty will be signed and become ready for submission to the respective parliaments.
