Wednesday, 15 June 2005

Content ID:

On 17 March 2005, the Assistant Treasurer introduced the Tax Laws Amendment (Improvements to Self Assessment) Bill (No. 1) 2005, which included provisions to give effect to the recommendations in the Report on Aspects of Income Tax Self Assessment to reduce the rate of certain interest charges and modify some penalty rules.

The Government now wishes to consult publicly on the remaining recommendations in the Report, with this release consisting of draft provisions to reduce the time allowed for the Tax Office to amend a taxpayer's liability in a range of situations. (Consultation is currently being conducted on the draft provisions relating to improving the framework for provision of ATO advice.)

Please also consider the consultation letter which outlines some important design issues that may provide additional context on the above measures.

The public have been invited to comment on the draft provisions and explanatory memorandum on measures to shorten many of the periods during which the Tax Office can amend taxpayers' assessments.
